The University of L'Aquila ( Italian Università degli studi dell'Aquila ) is a university in the Italian city of L'Aquila , the capital of the Abruzzo region .
In 1458 and 1464, the city fathers asked King Ferdinand II to be allowed to build a university in L'Aquila, but it was not opened until 1596 under Jesuit leadership. The university was badly affected by the earthquake in L'Aquila in 2009.
Today the university has more than 18,000 students spread across nine faculties:
- Faculty of Biotechnology
- Faculty of Education
- Faculty of Engineering
- Faculty of Literature and Philosophy
- Faculty of Mathematics and Science
- Faculty of Medicine
- Faculty of Psychology
- Faculty of Sports Science
- Faculty of Economics
A small group of particularly talented students from the university is supported at the Gran Sasso Science Institute in L'Aquila and at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso .
