Gran Sasso Science Institute

The Gran Sasso Science Institute (GSSI) is an Italian state graduate school and research institution based in L'Aquila in Abruzzo . The GSSI was founded in 2012 by the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN) and became an independent entity in 2016. There is still a close cooperation with the INFN and its Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso as well as with various elite universities and the University of L'Aquila .

history

After the earthquake in L'Aquila in 2009 , the Italian government decided to set up a higher education and research institution to make better use of the potential of the underground test laboratories in the Gran Sasso d'Italia . The GSSI was established by law in 2012 and began operations in the 2013–2014 academic year. On the way from an INFN research center to an independent graduate school with an international focus, the GSSI was supported by the University of L'Aquila and three Italian elite universities , including the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna . After an examination by state authorities, the GSSI received the status of an independent state graduate school in 2016. There are currently only three schools of this type in Italy.

Research areas

The GSSI focuses on astroparticle physics , mathematics , computer science and urban planning . The lingua franca is English. Ph.D. -Study programs are basically designed for three years. There are also a number of other programs and courses available. For particularly talented students in master’s programs at the University of L'Aquila, there are various supplementary courses and other additional offers at the GSSI. The few study places are awarded according to a special selection process.
