history

Diploma from 1672

The University of Messina was founded in 1548 after the approval of Pope Paul III. Founded as a studium generale of the Jesuits , albeit against the resistance of the urban ruling class, which sought a stronger influence of its own. It was not until 1591 that an agreement was reached that converted the college into a general university in exchange for funding from the city. The resistance of the Siculorum Gymnasium could also be overcome. In the statutes of 1597 the influence of the Jesuits is pushed back further, although the legal basis continues to be the bull Copiosus in misericordia Dominus Pauls III. stayed. The Archbishop of Messina acted as Chancellor of the university until 1641, when the office was taken over directly by the city's Senate. In 1679 the university was closed by the Spaniards after the crushing of the Messinese revolt (1674–1678) and it was not re-founded until 1838 by Ferdinand I.

The mathematician and polymath Francesco Maurolico was appointed professor at the University of Messina in 1569 , and in 1635 the botanist Pietro Castelli laid out the university's botanical garden.
