The Pontifical University of Santa Croce (also Pontifical University of the Holy Cross , Latin : Pontificia Universitas Sanctae Crucis , Italian : Pontificia Università della Santa Croce , abbreviation : PUSC ) is a university under papal law in Rome under the direction of the Catholic personal prelature Opus Dei .

The main building of the Pontifical University of Santa Croce is the Palazzo dell'Apollinare north of Piazza Navona and opposite the Palazzo Altemps . As a university church , the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare is attached to the Apollinare Palace. This church was built from 1742 to 1748 based on a design by Ferdinando Fuga .

Historical overview

In October 1984 the university began teaching as the Centro Accademico Romano della Santa Croce . At the request of the then chancellor and prelates of Opus Dei, Alvaro del Portillo , ordered the Congregation for Catholic Education with the decree Dei Servus on 9 January 1985, the canonical erection of the Roman section of the faculties of theology and canon law , which was founded by Opus Dei Pontifical University of Navarra in Spanish Pamplona . In the first academic year 1984/1985 of the new Roman Athenaeum Santa Croce , as the institution was then called, 41 students from 22 countries enrolled. This was an early wish of the founder of Opus Dei, St. Josemaría Escrivá , agreed to establish an academic training center in the Eternal City .

With the decree of the Congregation for Catholic Education of January 9, 1990, Pope John Paul II elevated the College to the status of a Pontifical University and appointed the Prelate of Opus Dei as Grand Chancellor. This is Fernando Ocáriz Braña since 2016 .

Organization and teaching

The University of Santa Croce has four faculties:

  • theology
  • Canon Law
  • philosophy
  • Institutional social communication

The theological faculty is affiliated with the Institute for Religious Studies , the Istituto Superiore di Scienze Religiose all'Apollinare , which mainly trains laypeople as religion teachers. In its teaching method ("complex learning"), the institute combines the traditional compulsory attendance with distance learning . Since 2012, it has offered the specialization Religion and Society as a degree . The new specialization Christian Humanism and Economic Development will be offered from the 2015/16 academic year .

The Historical Institute of San Josemaría Escrivá , established on January 9, 2001, is connected to the university. It conducts historical, but also theological and canonical research on St. Josemaria and his message promotes.

The Liturgical Institute was founded at the Faculty of Theology in 2009 and its range of courses is designed for licentiate and doctoral studies . In the Department of Church History , the Theological Faculty offers two year-long specialization programs From the Mediterranean to Europe: Christianity in Antiquity and the Middle Ages and Beyond Europe: Christianity in the Modern and Contemporary World . They correspond to the licentiate courses in the specialization church history.

The Theological Faculty also has the departments of Dogmatic Theology, Moral Theology, Spiritual Theology and Holy Scripture.

The Faculty of Institutional Social Communication was established in 1996. In addition to its academic curriculum, the communication faculty organizes conferences and training seminars for journalists and members of church press offices. The professional development program also takes into account conflict situations and their treatment by church decision-makers in contact with the media.

Since 2006 , the Faculty of Communication has offered courses in the fields of art and communication of faith , while the Faculty of Theology also offers Christian art history and liturgical art. Your story from antiquity to the present . At German universities, these subjects are not part of the compulsory curriculum for theology studies , although the Second Vatican Council wanted to include art. The University of Santa Croce tries to counteract this deficit in theological education.

In addition, the German art historian Ralf van Bühren shows the relevance of art history for cultural journalism , for public relations (PR) and media presence of the church as well as for journalistic communication about faith. His English-language lectures ( Christian Art and Architecture in Rome. From Antiquity to the Present ) are open to students from international universities.

On average, around 1,400 students are enrolled at the university each year, currently from 81 countries (as of 2017). The acting rector has been the canon lawyer Luis Navarro since 2016. His predecessor was the philosopher Luis Romera (2008-2016), professor of the philosophy of religion and metaphysics .
