The minor basilica is located in the Ponte district between Piazza Navona and the Palazzo Altemps . Since May 26, 1929 it has been one of the titular diaconies of Rome. It is also the station church on the Thursday after the first Passion Sunday.

history

The first church building at this point near the ancient Nerotherms is believed to have been around the turn of the 8th century. The patronage of St. Apollinaris of Ravenna possibly goes back to Basilian monks who, persecuted in the iconoclasm , fled the Byzantine sphere of influence ( Exarchate of Ravenna ) to Rome and settled here.

From 1284 to 1576 there was a collegiate monastery at the church . From 1562 to 1824 it was a parish church . From 1574 to 1773 it was also the collegiate church of the Collegium Germanicum et Hungaricum , which was housed in the adjoining palazzo at that time. When the Pontificio Seminario Romano Minore moved into the Palazzo in 1824, Sant′Apollinare was also assigned to it.

Sant′Apollinare has been the University Church of the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross since 1990 .

After the church had already been titular church from 1517 to 1587, Pius XI. In 1929 the cardinal diaconate of S. Maria ad Martyres moved here. John Paul II made it a minor basilica in 1984.

Architecture and equipment

Pope Benedict XIV (reigned 1740–1758) had the old church demolished and replaced by a new building in the classicist late baroque style . Ferdinando Fuga created the design of the hall church with six side chapels .

In the portal hall, which is the sacrament chapel of the church, there is the venerated fresco La Madonna dell'Apollinare from the 15th century on the north side . It shows the mother of God with the hll. Apostles Peter and Paul.

The names of the cardinals and bishops who died on November 16, 1984, the 100th anniversary of the episcopal ordination of Pius X are carved on the floor of the nave . ' were gathered in Sant′Apollinare.
