Palazzo Altemps

The Palazzo Altemps is a palace in Rome , in the Ponte district , at Piazza di Sant'Apollinare 44, north of Piazza Navona .

history

Around 1480 the palace was built for Girolamo Riario , a nephew of Pope Sixtus IV , by an architect who is no longer known today. After the end of the pontificate of Sixtus in 1484, the palace was looted and remained uninhabited for a long time. At the beginning of the 16th century, Cardinal Francesco Soderini from Volterra moved into the building. Polidoro da Caravaggio and Maturino da Firenze painted the facade for him.

Cardinal Mark Sittich von Hohenems bought the building in 1568 . From then on it was named Palazzo Altemps after the Italian version by Hohenems . Hohenems had the palace expanded and completely renovated, commissioning Martino Longhi the Elder , who created one of the most beautiful courts in Rome in the Palazzo Altemps. His son Onorio Longhi designed the facade of the building.

Cardinal Melchior de Polignac resided in the palace from 1725 to 1732 . In the 19th century the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei had its seat in it until that of Leo XIII. founded Spanish seminar moved in.

use

The relics of Pope Anicetus , which Cardinal Hohenems received from Pope Clement VIII, are kept in the Cappella di Sant'Aniceto . Anicetus is thus the only Pope who rests in a private house. The palace was the seat of the Biblioteca Altempsiana, whose holdings were transferred in two tranches under Pope Paul V (100 manuscripts) and Benedict XIV (almost 2,000 manuscripts and 12,000 prints) to the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana , where they became part of the fund of the Ottoboniani because they were acquired by the heirs of Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni .

In 1982 the Palazzo Altemps came into the possession of the Italian Ministry of Culture. After many years of extensive restoration, the building was opened to the public as part of the Museo Nazionale Romano . Ancient works of art from the Ludovisi and Hohenems collections are shown.
