Martino Longhi the Elder
Martino Longhi the Elder , called il Vecchio , (* around 1530 in Viggiù ; † November 6, 1591 in Rome ) was an Italian architect .
Life
Longhi went to Rome, where in 1575 he became the papal builder of Pope Gregory XIII. has been. He was influenced by Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola . Longhi completed some buildings on Capitol Hill in Rome and created the churches of San Girolamo degli Schiavoni (1588–90) and Chiesa Nuova. Its courtyard at Palazzo Borghese is a fine example of Mannerism in architecture . Longhi's son Onorio (1569–1619) was also a well-known Roman architect, as was his grandson, Martino the Younger (1602–60). The two created the Roman church Santi Ambrogio e Carlo (1612–42) in the perfect baroque style .
