Europe
- March 29th : The bloodbath in Gehn is the bloody climax of the Grothaus feud, begun in 1549 , by the knight Cord von Grothaus against the city, citizens and bishop of Osnabrück and the Count of Tecklenburg. Around 800 poorly equipped farmers from several villages (including farmers from Merzen under the leadership of Vogtes Hoberg) gather to fight the Spanish troops in the Eighty Years' War , after several looting in the Osnabrück region, including those in the Spanish pay the standing sons of Grothaus. In the subsequent battle in Gehn , a foothills of the Wiehengebirge , 300 farmers are killed. Only one man is killed on the Spanish side.
- May 15 : The Russian Tsarevich Demetrius dies. It is assumed that Boris Godunov , regent under Tsar Fyodor I , was involved.
- June 15 : In Châlons-sur-Marne the executioner burns the excommunication bull directed against France's King Henry IV by Pope Gregory XIV in public .
- July 31 : Norway introduces the office of Sorenskrivers , a secretary for villageing records. Over time, the position mutates into a single judge function for most disputes.

- March: On a campaign by the Saadians to the south of their empire, after the decisive battle of Tondibi, the Songhai empire on the Niger is smashed and the trading centers of Gao and Timbuktu are conquered. However, the conquests with which the Moroccan Empire reached its greatest extent cannot be sustained. Instead, the Sahara trade is shifting to Tripoli and Tunis.

With his bull Cogit nos on March 21, Pope Gregory XIV introduced a ban on betting on the election of a Pope, the duration of a pontificate and the creation of new cardinals. He provides excommunication as a punishment for violations. On October 16, after almost a year in office, he died at the age of only 56 in Rome. On October 29, after only two days of deliberation , the conclave elects Giovanni Antonio Facchinetti as his successor, who takes the name Innocent IX. accepts. He began his pontificate as a sick man and died two months later on December 30th . During these two months, however, he reformed the papal secretariat of state, which he divided into three main departments, one for Germany, one for France and Poland and a third department for Italy and Spain.
