Margarita Gonzaga
Margarita Gonzaga (born October 2, 1591 in Mantua , † February 7, 1632 in Nancy ) was an Italian princess of Mantua from the house of Gonzaga .
Margarita was the fourth child and eldest daughter of Vincenzo I Gonzaga (1562–1612), Duke of Mantua and Montferrat , and his second wife Eleonora de 'Medici (1567–1611), in turn daughter of Francesco de' Medici , Grand Duke Tuscany . On her mother's side, Margarita was a niece of Maria de Medici , the second wife of the French King Henry IV.
On April 26, 1606, Margarita was married in Nancy to Henry II , Duke of Lorraine and Bar , whose first wife Catherine of Bourbon had died in 1604. The couple had two daughters:
- Nicole of Lorraine (Nicole de Lorraine, 1608–1657), who married her cousin Charles of Vaudémont in 1621 and became Duchess of Lorraine.
- Claudia of Lorraine (Claude de Lorraine, 1612–1648), who in 1634 married Duke Nicholas II Franz von Lothringen , the younger brother of Charles IV.
Margarita's morning gift was the Margraviate of Nomeny and the land of Létricourt . After the death of her husband in 1624, she went to the French court, where she represented the interests of her daughter Nicole to rule the Duchy of Lorraine as the successor to Henry II.
Back in Lorraine, Margarita lived in Nomeny for several years . She died in Nancy in 1632.
