Nomeny is a French commune with 1,174 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Meurthe-et-Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ).
location
Nomeny is located between Metz and Nancy , about 15 kilometers east of Pont-à-Mousson , on the banks of the Seille .
history
First mentioned in a document in 609, Nomeny belonged for a long time to the bishops of Metz , who temporarily resided there. The bishops fortified the place with walls and towers and lived in a castle.
In 1548 Nomeny came into the possession of Nicolas de Lorraine, duc de Mercœur . Two influential children of this Nicolas were born in Nomeny:
- 1553 Louise , who through her marriage to Heinrich III. became French queen.
 - 1558 Philippe-Emmanuel , Duke of Mercœur and Penthièvre , Peer of France , Governor of Brittany , Marquis ( Marquis ) of Nomeny, military leader during the Huguenot Wars .

Françoise de Lorraine-Mercœur , daughter of Philippe-Emmanuel, sold the Margraviate of Nomeny to her cousin, Duke Henry II of Lorraine in 1612 . Heinrich II's widow, Duchess Margarita Gonzaga , lived in Nomeny from 1624 to 1629.
In 1632 Nomeny suffered badly from the plague and the unrest of the Thirty Years' War . Richelieu had the towers of the city walls torn down. Forty years later, Louis XIV ordered the demolition of the fortifications and castle of Nomeny.
In 1766 the place became - like the entire Duchy of Lorraine - French. From 1790 Nomeny belonged to the Meurthe department , from 1871 to the Meurthe-et-Moselle department.
On August 20, 1914, at the beginning of the First World War , German troops destroyed large parts of Nomeny.
