from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nicolas de Lorraine, duc de Mercœur (born October 16, 1524 in Bar-le-Duc ; † June 12, 1577 ), also called Nicolas de Lorraine-Mercœur or Nicolas de Mercœur for short , was initially Bishop of Verdun (1544 to 1547) and Metz (1543 to 1548), then Count of Vaudémont (1548 to 1577), Lord of Mercœur (1563 to 1569) and finally Duke of Mercœur (1569 to 1577).

Life

Nicolas was the son of Anton II , Duke of Lorraine , and Renée de Bourbon-Montpensier (1494-1539), German: Renata von Bourbon-Montpensier , daughter of Gilbert de Bourbon-Montpensier .

After the death of his brother Franz I , Nicolas took over the reign for his underage nephew Karl III in 1545 . together with his sister-in-law Christina of Denmark , the mother of Karl. In November 1545, however, the Lorraine nobility assembly decided that Christina should henceforth rule alone.

In 1548 Nicolas gave up his episcopate and took on the title "Count of Vaudémont". During this time armed conflicts flared up again between the Holy Roman Empire under Emperor Charles V and France under King Henry II . Heinrich occupied the three dioceses in 1552 . On April 15, 1552 he deposed Christina, who was a niece of Charles V, and replaced her with the Francophile Nicolas as regent for the then nine-year-old Duke Charles III. In 1559 he took over the government from his uncle. Nicolas then withdrew from public life and collected paintings, books and weapons.
