Riccardo Petrella (born August 5, 1941 in La Spezia , Italy ) is an Italian political scientist , sociologist and human rights activist . He is professor emeritus for social and political sciences at the Université catholique de Louvain ( Belgium ).

Career

From 1967 to 1975 Petrella was secretary and later director of the European Coordination Center for Social Research in Vienna and from 1976 to 1978 chairman of the International Social Research Center in Paris ; he was also a fellow of the Ford Foundation .

In 1991 Petrella founded the "Lisbon Group", a forum made up of 20 representatives from universities, industrial companies, the media and cultural institutions. The aim of the group is the critical analysis of globalization and its worldwide effects on people and the environment. From 1981 to 1994 he was director of the “Forecasting and Assessment in Science and Technology” (FAST) program at the European Commission . Since 1999 he has worked as a professor at various universities (such as Vrije Universiteit Brussel , Université catholique de Louvain , University of Italian Switzerland ).

Petrella is seen as a fighter for free access to water, which he regards as the “common heritage of humanity”, and is involved in the international anti-privatization campaign for drinking water on an international level. He is the author of numerous publications; one of his most significant works - Water for All: A Global Manifesto (2001) - came about through an initiative supported by the International Action Committee for a World Water Contract.

In the elections to the European Parliament in 2014, Petrella ran unsuccessfully for the L'Altra Europa list ( GUE / NGL group ). Petrella is currently President of the Institut Européen de Recherche sur la Politique de l'Eau (Europees Onderzoeksinstituut voor waterbeleid) based in Brussels. He is also involved in the Banning Poverty 2018 campaign .

Personal

Petrella is married to Anne Rondelet from Belgium and has three adult children: Francesca, Marco and Emmanuel. Today he lives in Schaerbeek, Belgium .
