Duchy of Mercœur

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The reign of Mercœur was elevated to the Duchy of Mercœur in 1569. It was in the Auvergne or in the later Haute-Loire department . The capital of the Seigneurie and the Duchy was the place Mercœur .

Mercœur was in the hands of the same family from the end of the 9th century until 1321, which was inherited by the Dauphins of Auvergne . Their heirs, in turn, were the Dukes of Bourbon , who gave Mercœur to the Counts of Montpensier, their younger line. Gilbert de Bourbon-Montpensier gave the rule to his daughter Renée as a dowry, whereby Mercœur went to the House of Châtenois . Nicholas of Lorraine , Lord of Mercœur, was made Duke of Mercœur in 1569. Via his granddaughter Françoise , the duchy came back to the Bourbons.

When Louis II. Joseph, duc de Vendôme et de Mercœur , died in 1712, the king refused to succeed his brother Philippe , as he was not allowed to have any property as the Grand Prior of the Order of Malta , and took the duchy.
