Anton II (Lorraine)

Anton II of Lorraine (born June 4, 1489 in Bar-le-Duc ; † June 14, 1544 ibid), also called Anton the Good , was Duke of Lorraine . He succeeded his father René II in 1509 on the Lorraine throne. His mother was Philippa von Geldern .

Anton was an opponent of the Lutheran movement. In the Peasants' War in 1525 he defeated the rebellious Alsatian peasants near Zabern . Initially under French influence, after 1530 he came closer to Charles V's imperial policy . In 1542 he granted him great independence in the Treaty of Nuremberg , which initiated the separation of Lorraine from the Empire.

Marriage and offspring

Anton was married to Renée de Bourbon-Montpensier (1494–1539), daughter of Gilbert de Bourbon-Montpensier . From this marriage there were three children:

⚭ 2) 1555 Jeanne de Savoie-Nemours, daughter of Philip de Savoie-Nemours, Duke of Nemours
