After the death of her husband René, Philippa wanted to take over the reign of her 19-year-old son Anton, but the Lorraine state parliament ruled that Anton was already old enough to take power. On June 13, 1509, she acquired the reign of Mayenne from her sister-in-law Margaret of Vaudémont, Duchess of Alençon .

On December 15, 1519, she entered the Poor Clare Monastery of Pont-à-Mousson , where she lived until her death.

When Philippa's brother Karl , Duke of Geldern , died on June 30, 1538 without legitimate descendants, she sought to rule over Geldern and Jülich , but Emperor Charles V preceded her by conquering the duchies. She transferred her claim to power over the two territories to her son Anton, who integrated their coat of arms into his Lorraine coat of arms.
