Adolf von Egmond (born February 12, 1438 in Grave , Noord-Brabant ; † June 27, 1477 in Tournai , Hainaut ) from the House of Egmond , was Duke of Geldern from 1465 to 1471 and 1477 .

Life

He was the son of Arnold von Egmond (* 1410; † 1473) and Katharina von Kleve (* 1417; † 1479).

In a bloody succession dispute, Adolf fought for the ducal dignity of his father Arnold. He was supported by the Geldrischen estates. The decision was made in 1465 when he was able to take his father prisoner. In the battle of Straelen on June 23, 1468, Adolf von Egmond was victorious over Kleve.

In 1461 he was accepted into the Order of the Golden Fleece . His increasingly anti-Burgundian policy provoked Duke Karl the Bold , who captured him in 1471 and reinstated his father Arnold von Egmond as Duke of Geldern. After the death of Charles the Bold, Adolf von Egmond was once again Duke of Geldern for a short time in 1477, but fell in the same year before Tournai. He was buried in the cathedral in Tournai .

Family and offspring

He married Catharine de Bourbon (* 1440; † 1469), the daughter of Charles I de Bourbon and Agnes of Burgundy , on December 28, 1463 in Brussels . There were two children from this marriage:

The son came from an illegitimate relationship with Elisabeth von Haeften :

  • Rainer Bastard von Geldern (* approx. 1460, † November 11, 1522). In 1499 he became lord of Grunsfoort, 1502–22 governor of the upper quarter of Geldern, 1507 councilor of Geldern, 1514 Drost of the Veluwe and 1516 lord of Wickrath. On June 29, 1503 he married Aleid Schenck von Nideggen († December 21, 1555), heiress of Arcen. Together they became the first parents of the later Counts of Geldern-Egmond .

The children came from other illegitimate relationships with unknown women:

  • Wilhelm Bastard von Geldern († after 1532), 1526 Canon of Utrecht and Xanten.
  • Katharina Bastardin von Geldern, 1526 nun in the Nazareth monastery in Geldern.
  • Ermgard Bastard of Geldern.
  • Johann Bastard von Geldern (* 1470, † 1509), 1492 Drost von Krieckenbeck and Erkelenz , 1501 pawnbroker of Rozendaal, 1502 mayor of Hattem, 1508 lord of Wilp. He married Margaretha van Eversdijk, daughter of Michael van Eversdijk.
