history

Map of Grave during the Siege, 1602
Grave, the town hall

The old fortress town of Grave, which already had city rights around 1250 , was the seat of the Lords of Cuijk or Kuyk in the 14th century . Johann von Cuijk walled the city in 1285. The strategically important grave was often a bone of contention between the Duchy of Geldern and the Duchy of Brabant between 1300 and 1550 . At the beginning of the Eighty Years War , the city was taken over by the Duke of Alba for Spain. In 1568 they captured the troops of the Prince of Orange under Sander Turck, but Alba took them again that same year. In 1577 the citizens drove away the Spanish occupation, but in 1586 the Prince of Parma stormed the fortress again. In 1602 Grave finally fell into the hands of Moritz von Nassau and thus became part of the Republic of the Netherlands . The fortress builder Menno van Coehoorn designed a new fortification which, despite successful sieges by French troops in 1672 and 1794, lasted until 1874.

During the Dutch War (1672–1678), Grave came into the hands of the French in July 1672 after several months of siege for two years. The city was occupied by a 4,000 to 5,000-strong French garrison in 1674. From July 1674, the city was besieged by a 16,000-strong force of Dutch and Brandenburgers under the leadership of General Carl von Rabenhaupt . The French had sufficient guns and a large supply of gunpowder and defended themselves vehemently under the direction of Marshal de Chamilly. The siege made little progress, but in October the besieged supplies ran out. After Prince Wilhelm III. from Orange had joined the besiegers on October 9th with fresh troops, an agreement was reached on October 27th, 1674 on the free withdrawal of the French. Both sides suffered heavy losses; the besieged over 2,000, the besiegers 7,000 to 8,000 men.

During the French Revolutionary War, Grave was conquered by surrendering at the end of 1794 by the French general Jean-Charles Pichegru after a ten-week siege. On May 16, 1814, the French occupation there surrendered to the Allies.

Grave often suffered from floods from the Meuse , especially in the 18th and 19th centuries . It is not far from the Beerse Overlaat area, which was often deliberately exposed to the water until around 1920.

During the Second World War , the Maas Bridge was fiercely contested on the American side by units of the 82nd Airborne Division as part of Operation Market Garden . Because “Grave” means “grave ” in English , it was quickly renamed “Graawi” for the operation.

politics

The local Partij Grave won the last local election on March 21, 2018 by a clear margin over the second largest group of voters, the CDA . They form a coalition with the CDA in the 2018–2022 legislative period.
