Complicated borderline

Baarle-Nassau is known for the complicated border line to the Belgian municipality of Baarle-Hertog . The state border partially runs right through residential houses and public buildings. There are numerous enclaves and even sub-enclaves .

The complicated border relationship arose from medieval treaties, agreements and exchanges of territory between the ruler of Breda and the duke of Brabant. These territorial distributions were ratified and more precisely defined in the Maastricht Treaty in 1843.

There was a time when, according to Dutch law, restaurants had to close earlier than the Belgian ones. For some restaurants on the border, this meant that guests only had to change tables.
