history
Tilburg emerged from around eight small villages at the latest in the 11th century , called "herdgangen" in the Brabant dialect . The old village centers can still be recognized in the names of neighborhoods such as de Heuvel, 't Heike, Korvel, Veldhoven, Broekhoven, Oerle, Hasselt and' t Goirke. It was not until 1809 that Tilburg was granted city rights by royal resolution.
Around 1600, the wool from the many sheep in the wide area began to be processed centrally in factories , and after 1850 in factories. In the early 20th century, there were numerous wool and textile factories in Tilburg, along with Enschede and Hengelo , the city was one of the most important locations in the Netherlands. For the production process in the textile industry , human urine was required from around 1600 to 1840 . The Tilburg workers had to keep the urine in clay jugs and take it to work. That brought the Tilburgers the nickname "Kruikenzeikers" ( Krugpisser ).
The Dutch King Wilhelm II held Tilburg in high esteem. He even made it a temporary residence by having a palace built here in 1847. The white building is now part of the town hall complex. In his honor, the local football club was renamed Willem II in 1897 ; its venue has been called the Koning Willem II Stadium since 2009 .
In the 20th century, other industries replaced the cigar and textile industries. In the 1980s, unemployment even exceeded 20%. The structural change then led to the city's ongoing growth. This went hand in hand with a change in the city administration, known as the “ Tilburg model ” in specialist circles: to run an administration like a company.
Economy and Infrastructure
Since 1993, Tilburg has built three high-rise buildings along the railway line to the west and east of the main station, which are viewed as skyscrapers on a Dutch scale : on the one hand, the headquarters of the insurance company Interpolis and the "Westpoint" residential tower (143 m high, briefly the tallest high-rise the Netherlands), on the other hand, the residential tower "De Stadsheer" completed the cityscape in 2006.
Since the 1960s, the city has made a name for itself as the "Heart of Brabant". With the reforms in the administration, the slogan changed to “Tilburg, modern industrial city”. The slogan now simply consists of a plain-colored square with a white “T” in the middle.
Tesla Motors - the world's largest automotive group that exclusively builds electric cars - has built a plant in Tilburg for the European market, in which the parts that are pre-produced in the USA are assembled.
A popular herbal liqueur is the Schrobbelèr made in Tilburg .
