Theo van de Sande (actually Theodorus Amandus Maria van de Sande ; born May 10, 1947 in Tilburg ) is a Dutch cameraman .

Life

Theo van de Sande studied camera / light from 1966 to 1970 at the Nederlandse Film en Televisie Academie in Amsterdam . However, at that time he was unable to obtain his diploma personally as he was currently assisting Jan de Bont with the camera work for the documentary Rock Fieber . And although he was allowed to take responsibility for the camera in Drop-out and Carna as early as 1969 , it took almost 5 years before he was able to take off as an independent cameraman with films such as Eigen haard is goud waard and Dakota . The following years were characterized by alternating between television and cinema and were quickly recognized. In 1982 he was honored with the Golden Calf for his work between 1977 and 1982, which was repeated again in 1987.

After van de Sande shot a documentary in Cuba and kept hearing about the capitalist monster USA , he visited this country in 1980 to see what it was like there. After renting a car in Washington, DC , he drove through it for a month Country and then spent two weeks in California . Theo van de Sande was married to the Dutch director Nouchka van Brakel , for whom he worked as a cameraman in her films Zwaarmoedige verhalen voor bij de centrale Verwarming, Het debuut and Van de koele meren des doods . He is currently married to the Israeli-Moroccan director Michèle Ohayon . Since 1992 he has been responsible for her documentaries as cameraman. He not only directed the camera in It Was a Wonderful Life, Cowboy del Amor and Steal a Pencil for Me, but also in the Oscar-nominated documentary Colors Straight Up.

In addition to his film work, van de Sande also shot spots for Opel , Ford , Coca-Cola and Starlight Express . Theo van de Sande has been a member of the American Society of Cinematographers since 1991 .
