The background of the film is set to the time of the Vietnam War and the moon landing . The two young soldiers Mickey Wright and Dalton Joiner serve for the US Army in the Vietnam War. In an attack on the position of the unit, a comrade is fatally wounded, while the two survive by luck. Wright and Joiner are later given a week's vacation in Hong Kong . Joiner decides to fly to his girlfriend Jane, who is waiting in America, for a week. Wright cannot fail his comrade and accompanies him. At home, they discover that Jane, now called Juniper , has joined a peace movement. The soldiers present themselves as deserters , although they wanted to return after the week. The question arises for both of them whether they should do their duty again.
