action

The successful lawyer Claire Heller Kubik is married to Tom Kubik and would like to have a child together. Tom is suddenly arrested, unexpectedly for Claire. He is said to have killed civilians in Salvador in 1988 as a soldier under the name Ronald Chapman . Tom claims he is innocent. He took part in an operation that was tracking a terrorist. He claims that Hernandez, a member of his platoon , killed some civilians in the village in a fit of rage. Since he did not want to participate in the subsequent cover-up, he was accused of the crime, so he had to go into hiding.

Together with the still quite inexperienced public defender appointed by the military court , Claire takes on the defense of her husband. Due to a lack of experience with military law, she also hires former military lawyer Charles W. Grimes. Kubik and Grimes track down a plot among US generals.

Claire learns the truth from an anonymous Salvadoran witness: Hernandez dropped a bomb on a café where the terrorist he was looking for was. Three American students were also killed. To cover up this, Hernandez later claimed the terrorists were responsible for the attack. After Grimes reveals some irregularities, the case is dismissed by the court.

Claire finally finds out that her husband killed the civilians to extort information about the dead terrorists and is attacked by him. At the last second, however, she can be saved.
