Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts is a luxury hotel chain and brand of Shangri-La International Hotel Management Limited , a multinational company founded in 1971 and headquartered in Hong Kong . The chain operates with the categories Shangri-La Hotel, Shangri-La resorts, Traders Hotels Kerry Hotels and Hotel Jen over 100 hotels and resorts in Asia , Europe , North America , Australia and the Middle East .
founding
The first hotel of the luxury group was the Shangri-La Hotel in Singapore, opened on April 23, 1971 by the Malaysian overseas Chinese and multi-billionaire Robert Kuok . The company name was derived from the novel Lost Horizon by James Hilton : Shangri-La is a synonym for paradise .
Shangri-La International Hotel Management Limited is listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and is considered the largest Asian hotel chain. About 80 percent of the shares belong to Robert Kuok (as of 2018).
Locations
The company maintains most of the over 100 hotels and resorts in the Asia-Pacific region , here with a strong focus on the People's Republic of China . Since 2003 the company has been expanding increasingly in the Middle East as well as in Australia , Europe and North America .
The three luxury hotels opened by Robert Kuok in Europe are the Shangri-La Hotel Paris on Avenue d'Iéna , the Shangri-La Hotel London in The Shard and the Shangri-La Bosporus in Istanbul (as of 2018). The opening of a luxury hotel on the Ringstrasse in Vienna , planned for April 2011, was canceled in February 2011 due to disagreements regarding the ownership structure between the real estate company and the hotel chain.
With the Shangri-La Le Touessrok Resort & Spa in Mauritius , the company opened its first luxury hotel in Africa in 2015 .
The Shangri-La Hotel Singapore continues to be the company's flagship . The Shangri-La Dialog , the most important security conference in the Asia-Pacific region, has been held here every year since 2002 . The hotel was also part of the special event area during the Singapore Summit in June 2018 .
