The Summit in Singapore ( English Singapore Summit ) between the North Korean leaders Kim Jong-un and the US president Donald Trump took place on the island on June 12, 2018 Hotel Capella Sentosa in Singapore instead.

The summit is considered historically important because it was the first meeting between a US president and a North Korean leader since North Korea was founded in 1948. The central theme of the summit was the North Korean nuclear program . Donald Trump described the summit as a "good start for peace", the North Korean news agency KCNA saw here an opportunity for improved relations after "around 70 years of confrontation and antagonism " between the two states.

course

Donald Trump left the G7 summit in Canada prematurely for the meeting, Kim Jong-un traveled with Air China . After greeting each other with a handshake, they withdrew for three quarters of an hour, only accompanied by their interpreters. The delegates from both sides were then included. Afterwards, the representatives of both countries had lunch. After another round of talks in the afternoon, the letter of intent was signed. Both heads of state invited each other, according to KCNA Kim has already accepted the invitation, a return visit is also planned.

While Kim was leaving the island, Trump gave a press conference in which he expressed his satisfaction with the course of the summit. Trump announced the discontinuation of the military exercises carried out jointly with South Korea , which was a central demand of North Korea. The American armed forces in South Korea should not be downsized. Trump said he had only briefly addressed the human rights situation in North Korea. In a spontaneous interview three days after the meeting, the American president told Fox News that he had given Kim a "very direct [telephone] number" that he could call him "if he had any trouble."

The talks in Singapore lasted around four hours.

Joint statement

At the summit meeting, the two heads of state agreed on a declaration in which North Korea and the USA undertook, among other things, to build new relationships with one another. North Korea should work towards a complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula. The US committed itself to security guarantees for North Korea. There should be follow-up negotiations, with which Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was commissioned on the US side . It was also agreed that the remains of prisoners of war and missing persons from the Korean War would be returned.

International reactions

South Korea
According to South Korean President Moon Jae-in , the summit was a “great event in world history” and with it the Cold War finally came to an end. Kim Jong-un saw Moon as a key figure in the rapprochement between the two states, according to the South Korean broadcaster KBS .
China
Chinese state media reported positively on the course. In an editorial, the party newspaper Global Times praised the US decision to forego military exercises in the future, which was also a demand from China for detente in the region.
Japan
Japan wishes to continue the maneuvers carried out jointly with the USA to ward off possible missile attacks from North Korea. The US presence in East Asia is important for their security, said Japanese Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera . A dialogue between the USA, South Korea and Japan is therefore necessary.
Iran
The Iranian government had warned before the summit to be "vigilant" in dealing with North Korea Trump. Against the background of the nuclear agreement with Iran, which the US had terminated , one is not “optimistic” about the reliability of agreements with the US. After the summit, Iranian government spokesman Mohammad Baqer Nobakht said that President Trump could still revoke the US commitment to provide North Korea with unspecified "security guarantees" in return for the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.

Second summit

Another meeting between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un took place in Vietnam on February 27 and 28, 2019 . North Korea's nuclear disarmament was once again the central theme .
