The summit in Hanoi ( Vietnam ) was the second meeting between the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and the US President Donald Trump . It took place on February 27 and 28, 2019 and ended early.

The first summit was held in Singapore in June 2018 . There the two leaders talked about the normalization of relations between the two warring states and about the framework of a denuclearization of North Korea. At the second meeting in Hanoi, the plan for nuclear disarmament and the further improvement of relations should be the main topics of the talks.

Kim Jong-un departed from Pyongyang Central Railway Station in an armored train for Hanoi on February 23, 2019 . On February 26th, Kim reached the Vietnamese border town of Đồng Đăng and was driven to Hanoi in a bulletproof Mercedes S600 Pullman Guard. Kim was accompanied by his sister and chief of staff Kim Yo-jong and the former intelligence chief Kim Yong-chol . President Donald Trump was accompanied by Foreign Secretary Mike Pompeo and Acting Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney . On the evening of February 27th, Kim and Trump were supposed to have dinner together, while the actual meeting was supposed to take place on February 28th. South Korea's Blue House speculated in advance that a peace deal could be reached to end the Korean War . This has been interrupted by an armistice since 1953 .

Over 3,500 journalists registered for the meeting.

Kim Jong-un said he would welcome the opening of a US liaison office in North Korea. A North Korean office should also be opened in Washington, DC . No breakthrough was achieved at the meeting. However, the talks showed Kim's will to denuclearization. Further meetings between Trump and Kim are necessary.

Donald Trump cited Kim's request to lift sanctions against North Korea as the reason for the lack of a jointly signed declaration from Hanoi. However, the US is not ready for this. Nevertheless, the talks went well.
