Kim Yong-chol (* 1945 or 1946 in Ryanggang-do Province ) is a North Korean general and politician ( PdAK ). He is Vice President of the Central Committee.

Career

Kim began his career in 1962 with the military police in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), which separates North and South Korea . He later became known through the North Korean Army and as the bodyguard of Kim Jong-il . From 2006 to 2008 he was Pyongyang's chief negotiator in inter-Korean talks, and from 2009 to 2016 he was head of the General Bureau for Reconnaissance ( Secret Service ). He is currently the Vice President of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea .

Presence at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang

As part of the North Korean Olympic delegation, Kim was sent to the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics closing ceremony on February 24, 2018 . Due to allegations that Kim was responsible for the 2010 attack on a South Korean naval ship , killing 46 sailors, his presence was highly controversial.

An article in Hankook Ilbo warned that Kim's presence could set off "raging waves" across the Korean peninsula. The Olympic Games ended without incident.

On May 30th, Kim flew to the US via China to speak to US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in New York City about the North Korea-US summit . He was housed near the United Nations in an accommodation of the US delegation, separate from Pompeo.

On June 1, 2018, Kim traveled to the White House for talks with President Donald Trump . There he handed Trump a letter addressed by Kim Jong-un to Trump.

As Kim is subject to US sanctions, an exemption was required for the visit.

After the failed summit between Kim Jong-un and Donald Trump, the South Korean daily Chuson Ilbo reported without a source that Kim Hyok-chol was shot dead at the airport after his return to North Korea. In addition to Kim, four other high-ranking officials from the North Korean Foreign Ministry are said to have been executed. According to Chuson Ilbo , the translator of the North Korean ruler Shin Hye Yong was sent to a prison camp. You did not translate a new offer from Kim shortly before the talks with Trump were broken off. Kim Yong-chol was also reportedly sent to a forced labor camp. There was no confirmation on the North Korean side. The reports turned out to be false. On June 3, 2019, Kim Yong-chol accompanied Kim Jong-un and his wife Ri Sol-ju to a concert in Pyongyang.
