Pyeongchang ( dt. Literally means "peace and prosperity", IPA : [pʰjʌŋtɕʰaŋ] ) is a district (Pyeongchang- gun ) with 43,706 inhabitants in the South Korean province of Gangwon-do and an identically-place (Pyeongchang- eup ) in it with 9940 inhabitants. The district was the venue for the 2018 Winter Olympics .

Geographical location
Pyeongchang is located around 130 km east of the capital Seoul in the Taebaek Mountains . This is the largest mountain range on the Korean Peninsula , it extends over large parts of the east coast. At 37 ° north latitude , Pyeongchang is roughly on the geographical latitude of Sicily .
The Namhangang River, the southern branch of the Hangang , has its source in the circle.
climate
The winters are long and snowy, benefiting from an altitude of around 700 meters.
Neighboring places
Pyeongchang is bordered by Hongcheon to the north, Gangneung to the northeast and Jeongseon to the east . To the south lies Yeongwol , west Hoengseong .
Administrative division
The district includes a small town ( Eup ) and seven rural communities ( Myeong ) with a total area of 1,418.72 square kilometers. The district head of the region is Shim Jae-guk (as of 2017).

Attractions
Part of the Odaesan National Park is in the territory of the county. Tourist attractions include the nine-story octagonal stone pagoda in Woljeongsa Temple, which is in the northern Daegwallyeong community. It is believed that the pagoda was built in the 10th century.
Sports
Mount Odaesan is a well-known national ski area and there are several golf courses. Furthermore, that is football - Fifth division side Pyeongchang FC in the town home. The club plays its home games at Pyeongchang Stadium .
Winter sports
In January 2007 the 18th Interski Congress took place in Pyeongchang. After Japan , South Korea is only the second Asian country in which it was held. Pyeongchang has achieved a certain level of notoriety through its applications for the Winter Olympics , the hosting of a biathlon world cup in February 2008 and the 2009 biathlon world championships .
The most important ski area is the Yongpyong Ski Resort in Daegwallyeong (not to be confused with the rural community of Yongpyeong-myeon), which is also the venue for the giant slalom and slalom of the 2018 Winter Olympics. The area has 31 slopes, 15 ski lifts, a 3.7 km long cable car and the Dragon Plaza , which is the largest ski house in South Korea.

Pyeongchang competed for the first time for the 2010 Winter Olympics , but failed with 53 to 56 votes in the last round of voting against Vancouver . In the previous voting round, Pyeongchang received 51, Vancouver 40, and Salzburg 16 votes. Another application for the 2014 Winter Games also failed, the games went to Sochi in Russia .
A third application was ultimately successful, in the award for the 2018 Winter Olympics , Pyeongchang prevailed with 63 votes in the first ballot against the applications from Munich (25 votes) and Annecy ( France , 7 votes). The Winter Games took place from February 9th to 25th, 2018. The Winter Paralympics 2018 were also held in Pyeongchang from March 9th to 18th, 2018 .
