Donghae is a city in Gangwon Province in South Korea . Located on the east coast of the Sea of Japan , it is home to the two ports of Mukho and Donghae. Until December 5, 1986, the latter was called Bukpyeong. The city had a regular ferry connection with Vladivostok in Russia and Sakaiminato in Japan until the end of 2019 . The Eastern Dream was used on the route . The South Korean Navy maintains the headquarters of its first fleet in Donghae .

- 1648: In the 26th year of the reign of King Injo ( kor. 인조 , Hanja 仁祖 ) of the Joseon dynasty, a village named Mangsang-ni ( kor. 망상 리 , Hanja 望 祥 里 ) in the Gangneung district ( kor. 강릉 , Hanja 江陵 ) mentioned in local records.
- August 11, 1941: Opening of the port of Mukho ( kor. 묵호항 , Hanja 墨 湖 港 ).
- November 1, 1942: The community of Mangsang ( kor. 망상 면 , Hanja 望 祥 面 ) in the district of Gangneung is named a small town of Mukho ( kor. 묵호읍 , Hanja 墨 湖 邑 ).
- July 1, 1945: Bukpyeong ( kor. 북평면 , Hanja 北 坪 面 ) in Samcheok County ( kor. 삼척군 , Hanja 三 陟 郡 ) is named a small town of Bukpyeong ( kor. 북평 읍 , Hanja 北 坪 邑 ).
