history
In 313, in the 14th year of the reign of King Micheon of Goguryeo , today's Gangneung was called Haseorang or Haseula. 397, in the 42nd year of the reign of the Silla king Naemul , Haseula was added to the territory of Silla. In 512 Ichan Isabu , the ruler of Haseula, Usan-guk, conquered today's island of Ulleung .
In 757, in the 16th year of the reign of the Silla King Gyeongdeok , Haseula was renamed Myeongju and consisted of 9 gun and 25 hyeon. In 1263, in the fourth year of the reign of Goryeo King Wonjong , Myeongju was renamed Gangneung-do.
Gangneung-myeon was declared a small town of Gangneung-eup in 1931. In 1955, the small town of Gangneung-eup and the communities Seongdeok-myeon and Gyeongpo-myeon were merged and raised to the town of Gangneung. In 1995, Myeongju-gun County was incorporated. The name Gangneung-si remained.
On September 18, 1996, a momentous submarine incident occurred near Gangneung .

Attractions
To the east of the city center and near the coast is Gyeongpo Lake. Gyeongpodae is a pavilion over the lake. Legend has it that the moon is seen five times at Gyeongpodae: in the sky and through reflections in the lake, in the sea, in the drinking glass and in the eyes of the loved one. Inside the pavilion with its 28 columns is the Gyeongpodaebu, a poem by the scholar Yulgok. It describes the movement of the sky and the moon. Nearby Gyeongpo Beach is a popular sandy beach on the Korean east coast.
The North Korean Sang-o-class espionage submarine, which wrecked in 1996, is on display on Jeongdongjin Beach . The Deungmyeongnakgasa is a replica of a Buddhist temple from the Silla period.
Culture
The city of Gangneung is best known in the cultural field for its many festivals. First and foremost, the full moon festival ( Danoje ), which takes place at the beginning of June on the festival site in Danojang on the Namdaecheon River, should be mentioned here. It has been listed as No. 13 of the national, intangible, important cultural assets since 1967 and has also been included in its list by UNESCO since November 25, 2005 . The festival is a combination of various memorial rituals and traditional games. Particularly noteworthy is the traditional Gwanno mask dance Gwanno Gamyeongeuk , which is performed by state actors and exclusively within the framework of this festival.
In addition to old, traditional festivals like Danoje, there are also some younger festivals. The International Junior Art Festival (IJAF) in particular is now enjoying great popularity. It is a cultural youth festival that is attended by groups from all over the world. In addition to the performances of the individual groups, discovering the culture of Korea is also part of the program of the participants. The festival has been held on Gyeongpo Beach at the end of July every year since 2002. The Gyeongpo Rock Festival, which has been taking place after the International Junior Art Festival since 2006, also attracts many especially younger visitors. This festival provides a stage for young bands from the area around Gangneung city.
The museum landscape of the city of Gangneung is quite diverse. The Ojukheon Museum, which takes its name from the black bamboo that grows in this area and marks the birthplace of the scholar Yi Yulgok and his mother Shin Saimdang , should be mentioned here. The museum has been listed as National Asset No. 165 since 1963. One of the oldest still original wooden buildings in South Korea as well as various shrines and houses give an insight into the life of these two famous Koreans. Attached is the Gangneung Municipal Museum, which exhibits folklore and ancient pieces. Equally informative is a visit to the Daegwallyeong Museum, which is based on a very extensive private collection with a thousand exhibits and reflects the history of the country.
Sports
Gangneung Stadium , which opened in 1984, is currently home to two football franchises: Gangneung FC (since 1999) and Gangwon FC (since 2008).
The sports facilities for the 2018 Winter Olympics, which form the Gangneung Olympic Park, are located in the vicinity of this stadium. Curling is played in the ice rink, which has existed since 1998 . A new hall was built for ice hockey , speed skating , figure skating and short track combined. Outside the Olympic Park there is also a newly built venue for the women's ice hockey tournament on the grounds of a Catholic university.
