Short track
Short track , also short track , is a discipline of speed skating that has been Olympic since 1992. The term short track refers to the comparison with the track length in classic speed skating, which is 400 meters.
Races and associations
The races are held on a 111.12 meter long oval track (usually on an ice hockey rink measuring 61 × 30 m or 60.96 × 25.91 m in size); the winner is a multi-round competition in the K .-o. system determined. In contrast to the related speed skating, the decisive factor is not the time achieved, but only the placement. Four to eight runners start each run (fewer on shorter stretches, more on longer stretches), two to three of whom reach the next lap. Mass start and running in a crowd (so-called pack style) place special demands on the tactical behavior of the runners. The tight curve radii force a significantly different running technique and equipment compared to classic speed skating.
There are decisions in the all- around competition , in the relay race and on the individual routes :
- The all-around event ( overall ) consists of races over 1500 meters (13½ laps), 500 meters (4½ laps), 1000 meters (9 laps) and 3000 meters (27 laps), which are held in this order (mostly on two to three days) become. The first three courses are held with all participants from the preliminary to the final, over 3000 meters there is only one race with the six to eight best placed after three courses. All-around champions are determined at world championships, European championships and national championships.
- In the relay race , teams consisting of four runners each compete in races over 3000 meters (women) and 5000 meters (men). There is a constant change, the runners who are not in action stay within the 111.12 meter lap. Relay champions are determined at the Olympic Winter Games , world, European and national championships.
- The individual decisions usually held are 500 meters, 1000 meters and 1500 meters. The event can take place both separately and as part of an all-around competition. Individual winners are determined at the Winter Olympics , world championships and some national championships.
At junior competitions as well as competitions not registered by the International Skating Union (ISU), other track lengths are also common.
The ISU annually organizes world championships (since 1976), European championships (since 1997) and the short track world cup . The ISU registers world records over 500, 1000, 1500 and 3000 meters as well as in relay races. Shorttrack has been part of the Winter Olympics program since 1988 (demo, officially 1992) .
Competent national associations (selection) are

train
The Austrian Association requires an ice surface of at least 60 × 30 m in size (usually with rounded corners), a minimum width of the longitudinal tracks of 7 m each, and a symmetrical shape of the two curves. 7 blocks are used for marking per curve, the middle (apex) block must be at least 4 m away from the band. The curbs must be fully padded to allow runners to hit them. Lanes shifted 1 or 2 meters in one of the 4 directions help to preserve the quality of the ice.
