Charles Hamelin (born April 14, 1984 in Lévis , Québec ) is a Canadian short tracker and Olympic champion .

Career

Hamelin started ice skating at the age of ten. He lives in Sainte-Julie and starts for the Club Montréal - International . He has been a member of Canada's national short track team since 2004 and is trained by Olympic champion Derrick Campbell . At the 2003 Junior World Championships, Hamelin won a silver medal over the individual distances of 500 and 1500 meters. He made his debut in the World Cup the following year and celebrated his first top placement (3rd place) at the World Cup in Bormio , Italy . With the Canadian relay he became world champion in 2005 and won the silver medal over 500 meters. That same year, he was Canada's Speed ​​Skater of the Year. At the 2006 World Championships, he repeated the gold success with the relay and also won gold over 3000 meters and a bronze medal over 1000 meters. Charles Hamelin holds the Canadian record over the 500 meter distance, as well as the world record in the relay competition.

He first took part in the Olympic Games in Turin in 2006 . With the relay he won his first Olympic medal. The Canadian relay came silver behind the Koreans. At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , he won two gold medals, one over 500 meters and one with the relay over 5000 meters. He won the gold medal over 1500 m at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi . At the 2014 World Cup in Montreal , he became world champion over 1500 m and reached over 500 m and bronze in the all-around event. In 2018 he won the bronze medal with the relay at the Olympic Winter Games over 5000 m.
