Samuel Girard (born June 26, 1996 in Ferland-et-Boilleau ) is a former Canadian short tracker .

Career

Girard had his first international success at the 2014 Junior World Championships in Erzurum . There he won the 500 m and the silver medal in the 1500 m superfinal. In the World Cup , he started in Salt Lake City for the first time at the beginning of the 2014/15 season , finishing tenth over 500 m and fifth over 1500 m. In the further course of the season he achieved his first podium positions in the World Cup with third place at the World Cup in Shanghai and second place in Seoul, each with the relay over 5000 m. His best placings at the 2015 World Championships in Moscow were 18th place over 1500 m and seventh place with the relay over 5000 m. At the beginning of the 2015/16 season, he came on the podium for the first time in an individual at the World Cup in Montreal with third place in the 1000 m. In the further course of the season he reached eight top ten positions in the individual World Cup, including third place over 500 m in Shanghai. He was also third in the relay in Shanghai and second in the relay in Dresden . In Toronto he won over 1000 m and with the relay his first World Cup victories. At the season highlight, the 2016 World Championships in Seoul, he won the 1000 m and the silver medal with the relay. He finished the season in seventh place in the World Cup over 1000 m and third place in the World Cup over 500 m. At the beginning of the 2016/17 season he won the 500 m in Calgary and also finished third in the 1000 m there. At the following World Cup in Salt Lake City, he triumphed over 1500 m. This was followed by three top ten results in the world cup singles and second place in the relay in Gangneung and thus fifth place in the world cup over 500 m. At the 2017 World Championships in Rotterdam , he won the bronze medal in the all-around event and the silver medal in the 1500 m. In the 2017/18 World Cup season he won in Budapest with the relay and in Dordrecht over 500 m and with the relay. He was also second in Dordrecht over 1000 m and third in Shanghai with the relay and in Seoul over 1000 m. He took eighth place in the World Cup over 1500 m, fifth place in the World Cup over 1000 m and third place in the World Cup over 500 m. At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, Girard won the gold medal over 1000 m. With the relay he won the bronze medal over 5000 m. In March 2018 he won the silver medal with the relay at the World Championships in Montreal.

In the 2018/19 season Girard won in Almaty over 500 m and in Dresden with the relay and took second place in Almaty with the relay. He also triumphed in Almaty with the mixed relay and ran in Turin to second place with the mixed relay. At the end of the season he reached third place in the 500 m World Cup. At the 2019 World Championships in Sofia , he won the silver medal over 1500 m. In the all-around competition he was fourth there and sixth with the season.

On May 25, 2019, he ended his career due to motivation problems.
