history
Dordrecht received its town charter in 1220, making the town the oldest in the former Holland (but not in the Netherlands). In 1421 large parts of South Holland were inundated with the St. Elisabeth Flood , making Dordrecht an island. The strategically valuable location of the city, which also had stacking rights , made it an important stacking market and trading center from around 1299 . Goods in the place were wine, wood and grain. The Hanseatic League knew how to put the commercial center of Bruges with the Dordrecht location under political pressure several times.
On 15./16. In July 1572, representatives of most of the cities of the Netherlands met in Dordrecht, in the “Het Hof” building. There they made William of Orange their leader and declared their independence from Spain . This Dordrecht meeting of the estates thus marks the beginning of the Dutch struggle for independence . In 1618/1619 an important religious gathering of the two Reformed churches in the Netherlands took place in Dordrecht as the Dordrecht Synod to discuss the Statenvertaling , the first Dutch translation of the Bible . It was opened and closed by the Dordrecht preacher Balthasar Lydius . In 1632, the Dordrecht Confession was adopted at a synod convened by the Dutch Mennonites . In the 18th century, the importance of Dordrecht decreased considerably in favor of Rotterdam .
Through the centuries Dordrecht has played a key role in the defense of Holland. Dordrecht was a garrison town well into the 20th century. Pioneers were stationed in the Benthienkazerne along the Oude Maas. During the mobilization in August 1939, teams were sent to Dordrecht to defend the island. During the German occupation from 1941 to 1945 the river clearing flotilla Netherlands was stationed in the Nieuwe Hafen. Dordrecht and its surroundings also became the focus of battles in the winter of 1944/1945 during World War II . The border between liberated and occupied territory was at the Hollands Diep . In 1970, Dordrecht incorporated the previously independent town of Dubbeldam , as well as the part of the (preserved) municipality of Sliedrecht located on the island of Dordrecht .
