The Verenigde Senioren Partij ( VSP for short , German  United Seniors Party ) is a Dutch party that campaigns for the interests of older people. The party leader is Herman Troost .

history

The VSP was created on December 15, 2001 through a merger of the two senior citizens' parties “Algemene Senioren Partij” (ASP) and “Ouderenunie”. Under its old name “Unie 55+”, the Ouderenunie succeeded in gaining a seat in the Dutch lower house in the parliamentary elections of 1994 , but lost it again in the 1998 elections. Shortly after the merger, there were internal disputes, the Ouderenunie then existed again as an independent party, which formed a joint list with the Vrije Indische Partij in the 2002 elections , while the VSP continued to exist under the new name.

The first top candidate was originally supposed to be the well-known radio and television presenter Wim Bosboom, but he died in November 2001. Anneke Smit-Boerma, formerly at Leefbaar Nederland , Hans Bos, formerly ASP, took over the party chairmanship. In the parliamentary elections of 2002, however, the entry into the lower house was not successful. The party did not take part in the new elections in 2003, and in 2004 Herman Troost took over the party chairmanship. In the 2006 elections, the party fared significantly worse than when it first ran.

Party platform

The party does not see itself as belonging to any ideological trend, but naturally focuses on topics that affect older people in general. The VSP is in favor of the creation of a minister for senior affairs. Care for the elderly is to be made more attractive by ensuring that earnings of up to 5,000 euros in this area remain tax-free. Euthanasia is affirmed, but should be under control in cases of doubt. The VSP is in favor of income-based rents, privatizations for their own sake are rejected.
