Dubbeldam is a district of the Dutch city of Dordrecht ( province of South Holland ). Until 1970 it was an independent municipality.

History and career

The name Dubbeldam can be easily explained as « Damm im Dubbel», a river that has now disappeared. The village was first mentioned in 1282. However, it disappeared completely during the flood of Saint Elizabeth , which ended the existence of the Dordrecht Waards in November 1421 .

However, the lords of Dubbeldam continued to exercise the rights to the village in their name. After a century, the slabs around Dordrecht slowly dried up again, and in 1554 the gentleman at the time came up with the idea of piling up the area again. During the 16th and 17th centuries, Dubbeldam was reborn from different polders . Since 1630 the village had a church.

In the Kingdom of the Netherlands Dubbeldam became a municipality. In 1856 this was increased significantly when the municipalities of De Mijl and Wieldrecht were lifted due to their tiny population and Dubbeldam was added. In the meantime, however, the city population of Dordrecht had increased significantly, which necessitated new construction outside its former city walls. For this purpose the city had to annex the Dubbeldam area again and again.

In the post-war period, Dubbeldam was also expanded into a suburb of Dordrecht, which has greatly changed its face. Many old farms had to disappear, as well as the old village church. That is why there are only a few monuments in the former village. In 1970 the community was completely abolished and added to Dordrecht.
