Nicolaes Maes (born January 1634 in Dordrecht , † before December 24, 1693 (buried) in Amsterdam ) was a Dutch painter .

life and work

Maes went to Amsterdam around 1650 , where he worked in Rembrandt van Rijn's studio. In his pictures he kept to the type and color scheme that he had learned from his master Rembrandt.

From 1653 to 1665 he worked in Dordrecht , where he initially created life-size works that were based directly on Rembrandt and perfectly imitated his style. From 1655 he mainly created small-format pictures of domestic scenes.

In 1665 he went to Antwerp , where he stayed until 1678 and then returned to Amsterdam. Later, the influence of Flemish masters such as Anthony van Dyck was reflected in his paintings. Van Dyck's influence can be seen in his portraits, which were painted in Dordrecht after 1660; at this time, a radical change in style towards a lighter, more elegant style can be seen.

Pictures by Maes are exhibited today in London , Amsterdam , Berlin , Brussels , Saint Petersburg and other important museums.
