history

River clearance boats on the Zuiderzee

After the occupation of the Netherlands by the Wehrmacht , the Kriegsmarine formed the Dutch river clearing flotilla in December 1940 in order to be present on Dutch waters. The flotilla was subordinate to the leader of the Motorboat Associations Netherlands and was set up and commanded by Kapitänleutnant Stepwieser in Dordrecht . Their task was to clear the Dutch inland waters of mines and, where necessary, to build new mine barriers . In the further course of the war other tasks were added, such as escorting merchant ships and repelling Allied bombers . On February 8, 1945, the unit was disbanded by order of the naval command and the remaining boats were handed over to the Rhine Flotilla . The remnants of the crews were transferred to land units and were trapped in the fortress of Holland by the Allies in the further course of the war .
