The Oude Maas ( German  Alte Maas ) is a tidal body of water in the Dutch province of South Holland . It flows between the island of IJsselmonde on the northeast side and (seen from east to west) the Dordrecht island, the Hoeksche Waard and Voorne-Putten on the southwest side.

It begins in Dordrecht, where the Beneden-Merwede branches off into the Noord , and ends at Vlaardingen in the Nieuwe Maas , with which it then forms the Nieuwe Waterweg . The Oude Maas is around 30 kilometers long and has two tributaries, the Dordtsche Kil and the Spui . The Oude Maas was once the mouth of the Maas , today it is an arm of the river in the Rhine-Maas delta . Since 1973 the Oude Maas has been connected to the Hartelhafen of the Maasvlakte via the Hartel Canal .

The Oude Maas is crossed by three motorway tunnels, two railway tunnels (Botlektunnel of the Betuweroute and Oude Maas tunnel of HSL Zuid ) and an underground tunnel. In addition to the Botlektunnel, a road bridge for slow traffic and hazardous goods transports over the Oude Maas, between Hoogvliet and Spijkenisse is the Spijkenisser bridge. For pedestrians and cyclists there is a ferry between Rhoon and Oud-Beijerland, and another between the Groote Lindt and Puttershoek recreational and leisure area belonging to Zwijndrecht . A water bus runs between Zwijndrecht and Dordrecht, and during the tourist season also to Oud-Beijerland.
