Car ferry at Hekelingen

The Spui is a body of water about 16 km long in the delta of the Rhine and Maas . Its width is between 130 and 255 meters and it has an average depth of 5.55 meters.

At Oud-Beijerland it branches off from the Oude Maas on its left side and flows into the Haringvliet . The water flows towards Harlingsvliet or Oude Maas, depending on the ebb and flow of the tide. The Spui is the dividing line between the former island of Putten and the Hoeksche Waard. Opposite Goudsward , the Bernisse flows into the Spui via an inlet system. The Bernisse supplies the Brielsemeer with fresh water.

A car ferry operates between Nieuw-Beijerland and Hekelingen , and a bicycle and pedestrian ferry connects Oud-Beijerland with Beerenplaat and Rhoon . There is no bridge over the Spui.

Along the Spuis are well-known recreational areas such as the Oude Tol near Oud-Beijerland, the Zonneweide near Pershil or the Costa del Spui near Goudsward . Be careful when swimming in the spui. The tidal currents reach speeds of several kilometers per hour.
