Location and economy

Oud-Beijerland is officially a village, but it looks like a small town. The place is in the north of the island of Hoeksche Waard , southwest of Rotterdam . The municipality can be reached via the Rotterdam – Bergen op Zoom / Roosendaal motorway. The nearest train station is in Rotterdam, 15 km away. From Rotterdam's Zuidplein underground station (by the Ahoy hall), Oud-Beijerland can be reached in 15 minutes by bus that runs every half hour.

The location on the Oude Maas and Spui enabled a diverse industry along this river; Smaller factories, workshops and trading companies in particular have settled here. The center of the old village, on and under a high dike, is an important shopping center for the residents of the whole Hoeksche Waard.

history

Oud-Beijerland was founded in 1559 when Lamoral Count von Egmont polded the swampy area that was his property . The village was initially named Beijerland after his wife Sabina von Bayern (Dutch: Beieren ). After Count Egmont was beheaded in Brussels in 1567, Sabina took over the administration of this area. In 1582 it was renamed Oud-Beijerland when another village - Nieuw Beijerland - was created further west through new dikes .

The old town hall, built over the Vliet in 1622 , was used as such until 1977 and has been a listed building since then.

In the 19th century, the town experienced a new economic boom with the establishment of a sugar and cigar factory . Today the nearby port of Rotterdam determines the economic life of the community.
