history

Gevangenpoort

Bergen op Zoom was created in the Middle Ages when three small settlements grew together. It was walled in 1330 and received city rights in 1347 . The city became the administrative center of the area; the lords of the city from the House of Glymes were allowed to use the title of marquis from 1533 ; these gentlemen's Palais Markiezenhof is now a museum. Bergen op Zoom, with its port on the Ooster Scheldt and its annual markets, was an important trade competitor for Antwerp, which is located to the south, until around 1500 . Two different influences caused a decline in the importance of the city in the early modern period: huge storm surges with flooding into the hinterland and the Eighty Years War (1568–1648). An exemplary event for the power of the elements is the St. Felix flood of 1530, as a result of this flood and other heavy floods, the neighboring Reimerswaal sank .

In 1577, during the Eighty Years' War, the Spaniards were expelled from the city. They made numerous attempts to recapture it: 1581 and 1588 (by Alessandro Farnese ), 1605 and 1622 (by Ambrogio Spinola ).

The fortress was laid out in 1688 by Menno van Coehoorn and was considered one of the strongest fortresses in Holland. However, the French general Ulrich von Löwendal was able to take it during the War of the Austrian Succession in 1747 after a three-month siege by storm, which resulted in a horrific plunder that struck all of Europe. (→ Siege of Bergen op Zoom ) He was blamed for it, but was promoted to Marshal of France by the French king . Just one year later, France had to vacate the fortress in the Treaty of Aachen in 1748 . The margraviate of Bergen op Zoom went to the Electoral Palatinate and in 1778 to Palatinate-Baiern .

On January 30, 1795, Bergen op Zoom was handed over to the French under General Pichegru without a fight. An attempt by the British General Graham to take the fortress by storm on the night of March 8th to 9th, 1814 failed. After the peace treaty of 1814 , the French had to evacuate them.

In 1867 the fortress was abandoned and its facilities razed.
