Location and economy
Oosterhout is about 8 km north of the city center of Breda (regular bus connection) on the Breda - Utrecht motorway . The Wilhelminakanal connects it with Tilburg and the Amer (which joins the “Bergse Maas ” at Geertruidenberg and flows into the Hollands Diep in a westerly direction ). There is quite a lot of industry in Oosterhout, including the Jamin confectionery factory , a central warehouse for EGLO Leuchten , a production facility for fruit processing by Döhler GmbH and many small businesses. The world's largest manufacturer of shopping trolleys , Wanzl , has been operating a service and sales branch in Oosterhout since 1970.
history
Oosterhout was first mentioned in a document in 1213. The Lord von Strijen , who was very important for the area, had a castle built here in 1288. Willem van Duvenvoorde (* 1290, † in Brussels 1353), bought this castle in 1324. He was very wealthy and acquired control of the whole area around Breda and Bergen op Zoom (the glory of Oosterhout).
On the night of November 18-19, 1421, there was a catastrophic flood , the St. Elisabeth's Flood , which turned the lands north of Oosterhout into barren swamp.
Between 1300 and 1800 several noble families had mansions, so-called slotjes (in German: "Schlösschen") built here. In 1625, when Breda was besieged by Friedrich Heinrich , Oosterhout suffered severe war damage.
Despite the Protestant rule, several monasteries in Oosterhout were able to assert themselves , for example the Benedictines , the Benedictines and the Norbertines . The Norbertine women settled in a former castle in 1647. Their abbey, Sint-Catharinadal ( Saint Catharina in the valley), still exists today. The nuns dedicate themselves, among other things, to the restoration of old books.
The Benedictine monastery of St. Paulus (Sint-Paulusabdij) was founded in 1907 by monks who had been expelled from the Abbey of Saint-Paul in Wisques . In 1928 it was elevated to the status of an abbey . In 2006 the Benedictines had to withdraw from the abbey due to a lack of young people. It was taken over by the Chemin Neuf community . There is still the Onze-Lieve-Vrouweabdij monastery, elevated to an abbey in 1924, which emerged from the Wisques Benedictine abbey .
The industrialization of the previously agricultural community began around 1860 when cigar manufacturers founded a company here.
Attractions
In Oosterhout there are some mansions from the 18th and 19th centuries, the so-called "slotjes", small castles.
The basilica of John the Baptist , which was built in 1475 by members of the Johanniter and last restored in 2000, and the houses on the "Heuvel" (German: hill) are remarkable.
The monastery of St. Catharinadal is also worth seeing.
