geography

places

The municipality includes the towns of Willemstad and Klundert, the villages of Fijnaart , Heijningen, Moerdijk, Standdaarbuiten, Zevenbergen and Zevenbergschen Hoek and a few other small towns. The municipality's town hall is located in Zevenbergen.

Location and economy

The municipality is located on the south bank of the Hollands Diep in the north of the province of Noord-Brabant and has a bridge connection with Zuid-Holland .

Zevenbergen has a train station on the Dordrecht - Roosendaal line . The motorway between these two cities also crosses the municipality.

The village of Moerdijk, created by a dike in the moor , is best known for the railway bridge built in 1872, at that time one of the longest in Europe, and the car bridge built in 1936, now converted into a motorway bridge, over the Hollands Diep. The bridges connect Noord-Brabant and Zuid-Holland and were therefore fiercely contested on May 10, 1940, the first day of the Western campaign in World War II .

To the west of the village of Moerdijk is a huge industrial area, where, among other things, a chemical plant belonging to the Shell group and a large electricity company are located. Fijnaart forms the north of a large area where a lot of sugar beet is grown and almost all of the Netherlands' sugar production is concentrated. RWE erected on behalf of Essent the gas and steam turbine power plant Moerdijk 2 426 MW. The 330 MW combined heat and power plant Moerdijk 1 was shut down in early 2018.

Moerdijk is one of more than 20 locations of the 'Ardagh Glass Group' for the manufacture of container glass in Europe.

history

In the Middle Ages, the area belonged to the county of Strijen, which was politically linked to Holland . In 1421 it was hit by the St. Elisabeth flood, killing many people. This created the Hollands Diep and the municipality was separated from Holland. In 1572 there were almost 100 Anabaptists who met in the house of Jan Pieters in Klundert; During a raid by the Schultheiss and his people, some women and six men were captured, tortured and burned. In 1583 William of Orange had the towns of Klundert and Willemstad, which was named after him, expanded into small fortress towns. Moritz von Nassau had it improved in 1602, and a beautiful town hall was built in both places. Willemstad remained a garrison town for over two centuries .

In 1845 the first railway coming from Belgium was built. Because the bridge was still missing, she used a ferry . The port was built in 1858, the railway bridge in 1872. In the meantime, sugar production had become more important than the production of linen from flax , which was beneficial for the economic development of the area. In 1953 Fijnaart and Heijningen were badly hit by the flood disaster .

On January 1, 1997, the municipality was established in its current form, but was still called Zevenbergen until March 31, 1998.

On January 5, 2011, there was a major fire in the Shell chemical works. The extinguishing work continued until the next day. During this time, there was the highest level of alert in Moerdijk and neighboring Dordrecht. There was also an explosion there on June 3, 2014, followed by a fire in which small amounts of ethylbenzene were released.

Attractions

Willemstad has a small historic town center, with many well-restored buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries. It is a typical Dutch fortified town . The city fortifications from 1602 have seven bastions , one for each province of the then Republic of the Netherlands. It was restored in the 1980s. Willemstad also has two marinas and some good restaurants. The Mannetje van Willemstad was found nearby .

Klundert owns a town hall. In a museum, the production of sugar from sugar beet and the processing of flax into linen are explained. Klundert also has a small marina.

politics

The local party Onafhankelijk Moerdijk won the local elections in 2018 and lost around nine percent compared to the election victory in 2014. In the 2018–2022 legislative period, it forms a coalition with the CDA and VVD parties .
