Oirschot [ ˈoːɾsχɔt ] ( listen ? / I ) is a place and a municipality in the Dutch province of Noord-Brabant . Audio file / audio sample

The municipality of Oirschot is part of the “Plusregio” Samenwerkingsverband Regio Eindhoven (SRE). This is a local authority between the municipal and provincial levels. Oirschot belongs to the De Kempen area .

history

Oirschot and the surrounding area have a long history. The area around Oirschot was already settled in prehistory. Old graves from that time in the forests near Westelbeers and traces of settlements from the Stone Age in the same area and in the Oirschotse Heide remind of this . It is believed that the first previous building of the Marienkirche at Vrijthof in Oirschot dates from the 5th century AD. For this reason, the 1500th anniversary of the village was celebrated in 1980.

The first written documents about the history of the rule date from the beginning of the 14th century . The boundaries of the old municipality of Oirschot run roughly on the boundaries of the "gemeijnten". These were vacant lots that the Dukes of Brabant gradually sold to the residents of Oirschot (including the residents of Best) in the first half of the 14th century. This gave the residents the right to use these parcels together.

In 1334, the residents of Oostelbeers and Middelbeers received a fee from Duke Johann III. the right to use the "gemeijnt" Beers. This was the area between Oerle, Oirschot, Oisterwijk and Hilvarenbeek.

Apart from a few border corrections and the extension to include Westelbeers in 1803, the borders as they were then set remained unchanged.

In 1819 Best was separated from the municipality of Oirschot and has been a separate municipality ever since.

In 1997 the old municipalities of Oirschot and Oost-, West- and Middelbeers were merged to form the new municipality of Oirschot.

Place name

There are several possible explanations for the etymology of the name. The most likely seems to be that of Dr. To be Maurits Gijsseling. A schoot (in Middle Dutch scoet written and scot abridged) is a projecting higher ground piece of land in a marshy area. In the case of the name "Oirschot", the aurochs ( oor ) had its camp on it. According to this explanation, the name would be older than the settlement of the place.

Attractions

Oirschot: Church "Sint-Petrus' Gangs"

The municipality of Oirschot has many attractions. There are more than 300 national monuments ( Rijksmonument ) and municipal monuments as well as two protected village views. Oirschot has the highest concentration of monuments in the Netherlands.

Some of the sights:

  • The Roman Catholic "Sint-Petrus' Banden" is a Gothic cross basilica from the 15th / 16th century . The 72 meter high blunt tower is a highlight of the Kempen Gothic.

  • The evangelical Mariakerk (Marienkirche), also known as "Boterkerkje" (little butter church) because of its function as a butter scales, is a hall church from the 12th century in Romanesque style.
  • The former Nazareth monastery with a chapel in neo-Romanesque style was built in 1910. The complex was designed by the Dutch architects Jos Cuypers (son of Pierre Cuypers ) and Jan Stuyt. It was the motherhouse of the Congregation of the Penitents of the Third Order of St. Francis , a branch of the religious family of the Franciscan Sisters , who were also called Franciscanessen van Oirschot after their place of origin .
  • The former brewery "De Kroon" has existed since 1773.
  • The "Hof van Solms" is the former palace of Arnoldus Feij.
  • The Big Chair is the largest wooden chair in Europe, demonstrating the expertise of the Oirschot furniture industry.
  • The "Huize Groenenberg" is a house from 1613.
  • The "Kapel van de Heilige Eik" (Chapel of the Holy Oak) is a stone chapel from 1606 on the site of an older wooden chapel.

Some larger establishments employ dozens of workers. Thanks to its favorable location in the triangle of Eindhoven , Tilburg and 's-Hertogenbosch and the proximity of the A58 motorway, Oirschot is an attractive location for companies. Between Oirschot and Eindhoven there is one of the largest Dutch barracks, the Generaal Majoor de Ruyter van Steveninck Kazerne , as a large employer. Permanent cavalry troops are stationed in the barracks (Huzaren van Boreel; named after Willem François Boreel ) and until 2005 the 41st division of field artillery.
