Mariano Rivera Paz (born  September 24, 1804 in Guatemala City , †  February 26, 1849 in Sampaquisoy , Jalapa , Guatemala ) was President of Guatemala twice .

Life

Mariano Rivera studied law at the Universidad San Carlos de Guatemala . Despite his outstanding achievements, however, he did not graduate. Nevertheless, he held various important functions in the local government of Guatemala City and the administration of the province of Guatemala.

Political career

Presidency

In 1838 the troops of the conservative military leader Rafael Carrera conquered Guatemala City and forced the liberal head of state Mariano Gálvez to resign. Shortly afterwards, Gálvez's deputy, Pedro José Valenzuela , resigned. As a result, the conservative Rivera was elected head of state of the province of Guatemala on July 29, 1838. He ruled with two interruptions (January 30 to April 13, 1839 and December 14, 1841 to May 14, 1842) for six years. His government owed its existence largely to the support of Carrera's troops.

Under the Rivera government, the province of Guatemala declared its withdrawal from the Central American Confederation on December 3, 1839 and became a de facto independent state (although the formal declaration of the "Republic of Guatemala" was only made eight years later on March 21, 1847). Rivera was the first president of an independent Guatemala. In view of the empty state coffers and the resulting lack of pay to Carrera's soldiers, however, at the end of 1844 there were differences of opinion between Rivera and Carrera. Thereupon Rivera announced his resignation and Carrera succeeded him in office.

Later functions

In 1846, Mariano Rivera was elected First Mayor of Guatemala City and two years later head of administration ( corregidor ) of the department of Guatemala . In 1849 President Paredes appointed him head of administration of the Jutiapa department , with the aim of "pacifying" this department. On the way to taking office he was murdered - together with the new head of administration of the Jalapa department Gregorio Orantes - in the village of Sampaquisoy by the assassins Roberto Reyes and Agustín Pérez .
