  • 1895 : After a collision, the express steamer Elbe of Norddeutscher Lloyd sinks in the North Sea, killing more than 300 people. The sinking of the Elbe is considered to be the most momentous marine casualty in the history of North German Lloyd.
1945: Wilhelm Gustloff (ship model)
  • 1945 : On the 50th birthday of its namesake , the Wilhelm Gustloff is sunk by the Soviet submarine S-13 . The sinking of the KdF ship used as a refugee transporter claims around 9,000 lives and is considered to be the biggest catastrophe in maritime history to date.
  • 1959 : Hans Hedtoft sinks off Greenland and 92 people lose their lives if it goes down . It is the last fatal shipwreck to date that was caused by a collision with an iceberg.
  • 2000 : A dam breach in the wastewater basin of a gold mine in Baia Mare , Romania, leads to the largest environmental disaster in parts of Eastern Europe since the Chernobyl nuclear accident. Wastewater containing cyanide and heavy metals destroys fish, other aquatic organisms and birds for hundreds of kilometers on its way via Someș and Tisza to the Danube .
  • 2000 : An Airbus A310 of the Kenya Airways crash after takeoff from Abidjan before Ivory Coast into the Atlantic . 169 out of 179 people on board are killed.
