  • 1895: After a collision, the North German Lloyd express steamer Elbe sinks in the North Sea, killing more than 300 people. The sinking of the Elbe is considered the most serious maritime accident in the history of North German Lloyd.
1945: Wilhelm Gustloff (ship model)
  • 1945: On the 50th birthday of her namesake , the Wilhelm Gustloff is sunk by the Soviet submarine S-13 . The sinking of the KdF ship, which was used to transport refugees, claimed the lives of around 9,000 people and is considered the greatest disaster in maritime history to date.
  • 1959: The Hans Hedtoft sank off Greenland, killing 92 people. It is the last fatal shipwreck to date caused by a collision with an iceberg.
  • 2000: A dam burst in the wastewater basin of a gold mine in Baia Mare , Romania, leading to the worst environmental catastrophe in parts of Eastern Europe since the Chernobyl nuclear accident. Wastewater containing cyanide and heavy metals destroys fish, other aquatic organisms and birds over hundreds of kilometers on its way via Someș and Tisza to the Danube .
  • 2000: A Kenya Airways Airbus A310 crashes into the Atlantic Ocean after takeoff from Abidjan , off the Ivory Coast . 169 of 179 people on board are killed.
