The Wave (1895)

Otto Heinrich Engel (born December 27, 1866 in Erbach (Odenwald) , † January 30, 1949 in Glücksburg ) was a German painter .

Life

Engel is considered one of the pioneers of avant-garde, modern painting in Germany. In 1898, alongside Walter Leistikow , Ludwig Dettmann , Oskar Frenzel , Curt Herrmann , Fritz Klimsch and Max Liebermann, he was one of the founding members of the Berlin Secession , which propagated the abandonment of academic painting. Engel's commitment to this artistic emancipation movement was largely limited to the early years. Between 1901 and 1914 he was characterized in particular by his numerous summer stays on the North Sea island of Föhr , which were accompanied by a lively painting activity. The Föhr pictures focus mainly on girls dressed in local costumes in the context of landscape sections. By directly applying impasto paint, Engel succeeded in quickly capturing the moods of a moment and documenting them in their fleetingness using the means of painting. In 1902 he received a small gold medal at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition and a large one in 1908.
