Walter Rudolf Leistikow (born October 25, 1865 in Bromberg ; † July 24, 1908 in Zehlendorf ) was a German painter and graphic artist of German impressionism .

Life

Leistikow was born in Bromberg (today's Bydgoszcz in Poland ), the second of nine children of the pharmacist Karl Leistikow (1820-1893) and his wife Bertha Cäcilie Leistikow, born. Hoyer (1837–1912) born. The house where he was born was in the lively Danziger Strasse (now defunct), on the corner with Elisabethstrasse, on the edge of the city center. This is where the parents' bittersweet factory Kujawiak was located, which provided the family with a substantial additional income for decades.

At the age of 17 he moved to Berlin in March 1883 to become an artist. But after only six months he was dismissed from the Royal Academy of Arts under Anton von Werner for lack of talent. He then took private lessons with the landscape painters Hermann Eschke (until 1885) and Hans Gude (until 1887). From 1890 to 1897 he lived and worked in the Atelierhaus Lützowstraße 82

Leistikow first took part in the Berlin Salon in 1886 and was one of the founding members of the opposition artist group Die XI in 1892 . Around 1893 he was at times close to symbolism , the color scheme and lines of which remained authoritative for him. The alleged rejection of the Grunewaldsee painting by the jury of the Great Berlin Art Exhibition as the foundation of the Berlin Secession is a legend.

Sunset on the Coast (1906)

Leistikow also worked as an artisan and designed furniture, fabrics, carpets and wallpaper, in line with the conception of art of his time. Around 1902 he worked for the Cologne chocolate factory Gebr. Stollwerck with designs for Stollwerck collector's pictures and designed a. a. the series "German Landscapes" for the scrapbook no. 5. He also tried his hand at writing. In 1893 he published the novella His Cousine in the Freie Bühne , and in 1896 his novel Auf der Schwelle appeared , but it was unsuccessful. In addition to Eugen Bracht , he is one of those painters who dealt intensively with open-air painting .

Leistikow was one of the members of the Friedrichshagener Kreis and spent numerous summers there at the gates of Berlin. Leistikow was friends and a. with Gerhart Hauptmann , Lovis Corinth , Max Liebermann and Theodor Wolff .

Leistikow's achievements in art policy include the establishment of the German Association of Artists together with Harry Graf Kessler in Weimar in 1903.

Leistikow had been married to the Copenhagen merchant's daughter Anna Catharina Mohr (1863–1950) since December 1894 and had two children, Gerda (* 1896) and Gunnar (* 1903). His nephew Hans Leistikow (1892–1962) also became known as a designer and graphic artist.

Walter Leistikow shot himself on July 24, 1908 during a stay in the Hubertus sanatorium in Berlin-Schlachtensee in the final stages of his long-standing syphilis . After a great and honorable funeral service in the Berlin Secession building, he was buried on July 29, 1908 in the Steglitz cemetery. His grave is an honorary grave of the State of Berlin . The tombstone - a work by Franz Seeck from 1909 - was renewed on the 100th anniversary of his death. The grave is located in Dept. Ih - Hereditary Burial 251.
