Hermann Wilhelm Benjamin Eschke (born May 6, 1823 in Berlin ; † January 15, 1900 there ) was a German painter .

Life

At the age of 17, Eschke came to Professor Wilhelm Herbig's studio in 1840 as a student and, on his recommendation, attended the Berlin Academy in 1841 and 1845 . Immediately afterwards he got a job as an assistant to the marine painter Wilhelm Krause , where he stayed until 1848. Through Krause's recommendation, Eschke got a job from 1849 to 1850 in the studio of the marine painter Eugène Lepoittevin in Paris .

In 1850, Eschke made extensive study trips to southern France and the Pyrenees and then returned to Berlin to settle there as a freelance artist. In the following years further study trips to the German North and Baltic Sea coast followed , Capri approx. 1871, South Norway approx. 1877, South Wales (approx. 1883), Isle of Wight approx. 1885, the Channel Island of Jersey approx. 1868 and 1886, the Brittany , the Scottish and Norwegian coasts (Lofoten, North Cape 1887). From all of his travels Eschke brought back sketches and drawings that formed the basis of his seascapes . But he also created oil paintingsen pleine air ”.

Hermann Eschke's reputation was due, among other things, to the frescoes Kaiserpanorama zu Berlin created together with his son Richard Eschke : The German fleet demonstration in front of Zanzibar , and the diorama taking possession of New Guinea .

Eschke was later honored with the title of royal professor and awarded a small gold medal at the Berlin art exhibition . In 1892 he was one of the spokesmen in the " Munch case "; his application ensured that the Berlin exhibition of Edvard Munch's works was closed prematurely.

Eschke had many students in the course of his life: Louis Douzette , Moritz Erdmann , Ernst Koerner , Walter Moras , Carl Saltzmann , Alexander Kircher and Fritz Sturm were among the most important. Among the successful students are his sons Richard and Oskar Eschke, with whom he also carried out commissions for the court (see above).

With his motifs, Eschke continued this genre of his teacher Wilhelm Krause and created it through the happy choice of the reproduced moods in a remarkable interplay between light, air and water.

Hermann Eschke was married to Anna Louise Minna Vogeler (* July 1, 1832; † April 6, 1913), had ten children and had lived at 11 Apostelkirche in Berlin since 1878. Her sons included the painters Oscar Eschke (1851–1892) and Richard Eschke (1859–1944).

Hermann Eschke died in Berlin in 1900 at the age of 76 and was buried in the Old Twelve Apostles Cemetery in Schöneberg . The grave has not been preserved.
