Erasmus Engert
Erasmus Engert (born February 24, 1796 in Vienna ; † April 14, 1871 ibid), also called Erasmus Ritter von Engert , was an Austrian painter and restorer .
Life
Engert studied from 1809 to 1823 at the art academy in his hometown. Later he went to Italy and on his return made portraits and historical paintings, including copies of older masterpieces. In 1843 he became custodian of the Imperial and Royal Picture Gallery in Belvedere Palace , in which position he dedicated himself to restoration.
In 1857 Engert became director of the same picture gallery and published an extremely poor catalog of the same. In 1865, Emperor Franz Joseph I awarded him the title of knight and thus elevated him to the nobility .
